sf02 is winning friends and influencing people

Our adventuring heroes totally win and everything is awesome forever, right?

Feedback welcome on the big finale.

In thanks for your patience with the slow progress on this story, let me detail exactly why it went so slow. I suggest reading the story completely before proceeding.

Go ahead, we’ll wait. Read up and then come back.

I had one major goal for this chapter: The heroes learn that Essence Capacitors are storing sacrificed souls. Also, I wanted to take this opportunity to fire a salvo at that d-bag who was sniping me on TV Tropes. Yes, I am petty, but for a good cause — in the process I could do some quality world-building and explore Orbital culture, particularly how it relates to sexuality and relationships. That’s something I’d honestly been wanting to do for some time.

But I had no other ideas, beyond “Sooouls!” and “Gay people?”. That meant I had to iron out a lot of details as I went. For instance:

* Originally, Jon was going to be very cheerful and outspoken, then one day he asked the wrong question and got Total Social Conversion, and was suddenly suspiciously sullen. Chu would then defect in order to find a way to help him / find a way to defeat the ones who destroyed Jon. This didn’t work I wanted to compress the timetable (a single day) and I had a better idea for the final confrontation.

* Originally, Maria was indeed going to escape the Quantum Mermaid and become Queen of the Zombies, rallying behind their cause. She’d later show up during the final chapter. I decided though that it’d be too depressing to simply lose her, and I had no way of getting her back. Also, no way she’d voluntarily run off and join the zombies when she’d been living an ordinary life all this time. Also ALSO, how the heck could she escape the Mermaid with so many people on hand to stop her?

* Once I had the idea for the final confrontation and the end results, it came down to who was going to betray the Ascendancy, Jon or Chu? But I needed someone ready to cast the Sacrifice spell, AND someone ready to leave with knowledge of the Sacrifice spell. So, I had to make sure Chu had familiarity with it, even though he wasn’t slated to be the defecting specialist.

* Some of my early ideas for “How do Nel and Una get the magic back to Emily?” involved things like stealing ceremonial robes with runes sewn into them — connecting this to the London’s Fog retail bonus chapter, and connecting it to Chu’s laundry duty. But I felt it’d be better if the spell was directly tied to a person, and so I made it tattoo based.

There were a lot of hurdles to jump, events to chain together, decisions to make about who was who and what and why. In the end, I think I got a working story put together, but it was a long slog to get there.

Now, we have sf03. I have very few ideas, other than “Jesse and Gilbert rescue Chloe” and some other things I don’t want to tell you about yet. We’ll see where that goes. I doubt I’ll have an update posted on Monday since I need to do a LOT of thinking, outlining, and considering of things.

So, sf02. The day is saved, the mission is a success, the heroes got away with it… almost cleanly.

Holy shit.
Aside from that, the only thing I can think of proof-wise is that the generally accepted name used for residents of Atlantis is “Atlanteans,” although obviously there’s no official name. (You used “Atlaneans” and I wasn’t sure that was a deliberate typo.)

Nitpick — Portugese and Spanish are different languages… as I recall Orlando said they had some things in common but her flunking out of Spanish might not relate much.
“Deal with them later, always deal with them, but not until the mission was over.” Sounds like a good approach when someone’s capable of pulling it off.
Ahah, so the limitless hunger of the Network is actually an aberration.
“others of her mind.” — nice play on words/concepts. :D
Love the whole conversation between Maria and the Network. Well-played.
“shattered debris and buildings” — daaamn, that is one strong car. XD
YAY LOVE except oh dear that’s not good
“hit his shoulder” I think we need to hear whose shoulder that was. Chu presumably.
“she thought” — wait, so the spell goes off and… presumably Una, gets this little internal auto-eulogy all thought out before the spell makes contact? I’m confused… Ah, guess she jumped in there voluntarily. But still, the timing puzzles me.
No reaction from Jon?
Poor Una. At least she is incapable of noticing that it matters that she feels this way. Er. Doesn’t feel this way.
Typo patrol: porcelian/porcelain, lullabyes/lullabies, Dagner/Danger, normally designated (hyphen, and shouldn’t that be designed?), “through to his shock” (remove “to”), foot thick (hyphen), high speed (hyphen), hard won (hyphen), siezed/seized, normally cheerful (hyphen, if this is needed at all. Don’t we all know what he’s normally like by now?), lie/laid,

The problem with one of those “split second action sequence” scenes is you can’t go in-depth into everybody’s positioning and timing, especially when you’re trying to leave it ambiguous until it’s “too late” and all the reader has is the end result. Like two men struggling over a gun, a shot going off, and you don’t know who got shot until someone falls over. I’ll do what I can to clarify that Una threw herself in front of Jon to keep him safe, but I can only do so much.
Similarly, no room for any notable reaction from Jon. Nel is the focus, after that. Given Jon’s been alternatively simpering / emotionally dead, his non-reaction should be reasonable.

Jon doesn’t have to do any active reacting, he’s been pretty much in shock the whole time. But it’s like he’s gone entirely from the scene after that. He was just talking to Chu, who he apparently cares enough about to revive from the shock and talk to, and Chu DID just try to attack him / got attacked by Nel.
What I mean is, there’s a difference between making a safe assumption about what Jon’s doing, vs. causing the audience to stop and say “wait uh where’s Jon in all this? Did he get hit too? Does he care what Nel’s doing? He went with them, right?”
It just took me out of the scene a bit, that’s all I’m saying. Maybe I’m the only one who reacted that way.
I got it that Una jumped in there voluntarily, just puzzled over the timing of her apparently long consideration of her actions before doing it.

Oof. Yeah, I nearly cried at the ending. I still feel sad.
The sheer split-second nature of the climactic scene meant that I had to re-read it a couple of times to make sure I understood what had really gone on. But yeah, wow. Not necessarily irreversible, but not looking good at all.

I figure the Spanish/Portuguese comparison is basically comparing two Romance languages. Also, tiny continuity nitpick: Maria is speaking a bit of Spanish in the fs bonus story, but it might just be a phrase she picked up from Elisa.

I figure the Spanish/Portuguese comparison is basically comparing two Romance languages. Also, tiny continuity nitpick: Maria is speaking a bit of Spanish in the fs bonus story, but it might just be a phrase she picked up from Elisa.

“I got it that Una jumped in there voluntarily, just puzzled over the timing of her apparently long consideration of her actions before doing it.”
Yeah, personally I think it might flow better to just remove her extended reaction, something like:
“I could… I could make you stay,” he suggested, desperation creeping in. “For your own sake. For all our sakes. …I’m sorry I didn’t want to have to do this you left me no choice [sacrifice]–”
An energy blast from Petersen’s gun hit his shoulder, but by then it was too late.
Jon closed his eyes, accepting how just it was that this should be his fate. In the darkness, he saw a flash of light and felt a violent jerk in his chest.
A scream of terror filled the skies of São Paolo, as Nel moved slower than she wanted to, too slow. Her hand stretched towards the glow…
In front of Jon… Una sank to her knees, her eyes going dull, as the tube in Chu’s hand burned brightly with the energy of her sacrificed soul.

Jen here. See, that would work in terms of pacing — but I am assuming we need some kind of “last words” from Una. It helps make it believable that this may indeed be the last of her as the character that we knew. It’d be nice to do that _somehow_.
He’ll work something out, I’m sure.

Maybe. I’m not even sure that’s necessary, though. Una’s been saying her “last words” for the last two chapters now: in Chapter 1 we have her talking about how far she’s come, and how her life has changed over the years. In this chapter she’s been calling back to her old status as a ninety-one a few times already, and her (somewhat legitimate) fears that she’s out of her depth, an token normal among demigods, and that she wants to make something of her life. She doesn’t need any “last words” at this point; her whole story has been leading up to this moment. Heck, we’ve even been throwing around the word “SACRIFICE” all chapter; the foreshadowing is practically dripping down the walls. :)
Really the one whose story “feels” incomplete is Kas. The foreshadowing on her death was so thick it seems a little anticlimactic for her to die in the first chapter. Because, really, we’ve got Esrever and Ono reaching for her moments before the whole area teleports to a random dimension, and they all “die” even though we never see a body. I’m sure we’ll never see them again. :D

I think it needs the last words; they’re the capstone on the arc. But I can fix it easily, by saying “In the space of a single breath, Una thought…” and we understand it happened very, very fast.

Back in Forsaken Shores, Gilbert Gearhaus worked out the logical structure of Fae magic, and used that knowledge to build a new spell. I’ve been wondering ever since why nothing seems to have come from that – you’d think Gilbert would have published his insights, or explained them to Jesse, or to one of the more technically minded elves. Maybe this is where that plot thread gets taken up – Emily calls in Gilbert to analyze the sacrifice spell and the Essence Capacitor, to see if Una’s soul can be restored, or if Essence Capacitors can be built without using human souls as raw material. That’s what I’d do in Emily’s position. OTOH, if sf03 sends Jesse and Gilbert to England, Gilbert may not be around for that …

Gilbert doesn’t have a full working knowledge of magic; he reverse engineered two spells based on some of his most dangerous mental overdrives. I don’t think he can pull the same feat again, not now that his steam levels have been rebalanced. He’s still brilliant, but lacks the autistic-savant bursts of cleverness he had when he was dying.

Not likely. The spell specifically pulls the energy from a living person and puts it in a container; it doesn’t reverse the process.

One last thing as I re-read sa04: The Maria we know was the recipient of an Orbital cancer treatment (courtesy Zee), which technically means that all physical aspects of her zombiness should have been eliminated since they cloned the human portion of her body and transferred the soul. Is that going to be retconned, or at least hand-waved away? (I can see the psychic aspects activating–as two centuries of being a Muerta would leave a mark on someone’s soul–and her having a major headache from Los Muertos, but the cold would in fact just be a cold, perhaps leaving her more susceptible to psychic infection.)

I believe that’s commented on in the story — they THOUGHT she was free and clear, and should have been according to how the process works, but it came back all the same, as did the accompanying Fae enchantment. The process may work on mundane cancer but it was only 99% effective on that combo.
