sf01 does what has to be done

16 05 2011

One destiny is unclear, the other is realized.

This is the official start of the Stars Fall saga. I’ve figured out enough of its schemes and plots that I feel confident enough in beginning to put digital pen to digital paper. I can’t promise regular Mon/Thu updates, but I’ll do what I can.

We may be approaching the end, but it’s going to take a few months to get there. We have a London’s Fog book to produce. And as always, more readers = very good, so talk it up with your friends, promote it in social media, etc. I know there are folks out there who enjoyed Sailor Nothing and Unreal Estate but don’t even know anachronauts exists… maybe we can reach them.

So, Stars Fall 01: The Ascent. Read, and let me know what you think.

Nothing like starting off with a bang.
Actually, since we the readers are privy to all the hints you’ve been dropping, I feel as though I want to be VERY VERY ANGRY with whoever thinks this is a good idea. In the story, of course, not with you.

Oh, shit, Kas.

It’s 15% a good idea, 85% petty revenge on the behalf of the one who did the deed. Kind of like everything the one responsible does, in general, no matter how they claim otherwise.

Can’t say you weren’t warned. I had this in mind ever since I started sa08.

This doesn’t stop us from shaking our fist in your general direction.

— The dream has come up before, but having it happen again here sets the stage with drama and foreshadowing. Also, I think maybe there’s more detail this time… very interesting, and good to refresh the minds of readers.
— YAY Scout getting screen time with Emily. :D
— I’m confused here — Kas was packing so I assumed she was in her quarters, but then Ono is there somehow. Is she in the lab? Did he come into her quarters?
— Ah, so that’s what Project Pangea is. Been wondering since 00.
— primed for achieving — I’d say “primed to achieve” if you want active voice there.
— A wall. o_o
— “There is no safe distance.” EEEEEEE
— “The things things done” — remove bonus things
— Wow. What a great scene! Kas!!

Aww, Kas. ;_; I know we saw it coming, but it’s still sad. At least she got a good sendoff. Now I’m on edge wondering if Ono made it out.

Kas was packing hours before. Then she got restless and went to the lab to try and finish up the latest round of experiments. I’ll clarify in edits.
Was Project Pangea not described clearly enough in sf00? Note that I did some rewriting on Saturday which included more detail.

It still pinches the heart to read that Kas is gone. I guess I liked her after all !

Only two and a half earth mass ? I though they mined a lot of parallels earth; is shifting that costly (energywise) ?

I read it as while lots of mass was used to RECHARGE the Mass Capacitors, only a couple of planets were used to CREATE them. Thus, Kas (RIP) being frustrated about being able to recharge the MCs with the Solar Array, but not create new ones (Project Pangea).

That he used the same line in sa08 to discuss her death as he did here just adds a poetic resonance after that giant slap upside the head.

Pretty much. What they really had was a hybrid — crappy old capacitors that require ridiculous mass to hold any charge whatsoever, and shiny new tech to recharge them once spent.
Think of it like gasoline vs. electric cars. You need to keep refilling your car if you use gas, meaning mining more oil out of the ground to keep it going. Electric, you can recharge the battery as often as you like — but you do need the battery in the first place and that means mining up minerals and dangerous chemicals.

Copypasta for maximum damage!

Hmm, lemme go skim it again.
Clearly Kas is planning _something_. Wondering how they got back to Faerie after it was depopulated… wondering about empty earths… Then she mentions Project Pangea without explicitly explaining it.
But it doesn’t have to be explicit; it’s explained here in 01 for anyone who didn’t infer it before.

Since they had been disposing of spent capacitors for a while there before Kas realized they could be recharged, it didn’t surprise me that there were only 2.5 Earths of mass in the capacitors at the arcology.
What surprised me was — since I can’t imagine this is a freak accident — if Kas hadn’t saved them, wouldn’t this basically kill everyone on Earth (and by extension, the moon) as well as anybody in low Earth orbit? I asked Stefan about that earlier and it sounded like the potential overkill did make sense (though it’s not clear why yet).
and yeah, poor Kas. Good poignancy on the martyrdom. Wallflower and Kas can watch over everybody from On High now, heh.

It’s not hard to imagine this is sabotage, since the prelude suggested that someone is out to not only destroy Kas, but her legacy as well. Could be they figured it’d be enough to take out New Orleans (resulting in a post-Pandora equivalent of 9/11) without realizing the full extent of the damage.

Yeah, that was what I theorized when I talked to him too — taking out New Orleans would be helpful to The Bad Guys, as that’s two major faction heads together (Orbitals and Fae).
Although as 2f said above, it’s only 15% to serve the purpose and the rest of the motivation is petty revenge…

And coming up with the charge from somewhere — like a coal-fired plant you never see.

That is a terrifying nightmare, both the dream and the losses in the next scenes.
