lf01 is negotiating the terms

Oh yeah, almost forgot Benny’s hanging around too.

Two new scenes, working on involving Benny with the plot. After this, the actual PLOT launches, not just setup for the plot. …and I’ve got work to do, because beyond a vague idea, I’ve got nothin’ else for this chapter. It feels like it needs some conflict, past simply getting the team together. Although getting the team together’s taken 64k so far of text. Hmm. Choices.

While I’ve got you here, let me run an informal poll. Do you want another anachronauts book?

I could do Forsaken Shores, which is a nicely self contained adventure, and toss in another bonus chapter like I did with First Age. I could do Second Age, although that’s a series of oneshots, and maybe best kept to the website. Or if you’re cool with the book you have or aren’t buying any books, let me know that, too. Gotta know, you know?

  • 00:59:51: Went ahead and nabbed all the Mass Effect 2 DLC. I’d been ignoring it, but if I’m gonna get the Shadow Broker, I may as well get the rest.
  • 16:17:34: It’s a good day to be a nerd. More of the #RB3 setlist, more Capcom games, and an Avatar animated spinoff series. http://bit.ly/ajravN
  • 23:17:53: Playing some Mass Effect 2 DLC. It’s been eight months since I last played this game. Good times… good times.
  • 23:40:41: ME2 runs smoooth on my system, 60 FPS all the way. Other console ports run like crap (ghostbusters, force unleashed). Good on Bioware.

Yay, Chloe!
Books books books. On the one hand, my overhead bookcase fell off the wall the other day and would almost certainly have killed me if I’d been in bed at the time, so maybe I should stop buying so many books…
No, not at all. I’ll buy whatever ones you make, really. I’d like a series of hundreds, for preference, but whatever works for you.

I am all about the dead trees, as you might expect. What I would do if I were you is to publish the stories with continuity first, and then do a collection of one-shots. This is what Ursula K. LeGuin did with Earthsea.

That’s my thinking, too. So First Age, Forsaken Shores, London’s Fog, and “???”… THEN go back and do a best-of Second Age book or something like that.
Although I’m gonna have to include Second Age 02 as a bonus story in either Forsaken Shores or London’s Fog. It’s Benny and Chloe’s big intro, after all.

I’m reminded of how some light novel series do the same thing, interspersing ongoing plot-based volumes with short story collections. Full Metal Panic, The ____ of Suzumiya Haruhi, and The Third all follow that pattern – although in FMP’s case, the short-story volumes are usually lighter-hearted than the plot-focused books.
That said, I can see both story-arc “novels” and one-shot collections becoming part of the hard-copy anachronauts canon, as well as remaining online if you’re so inclined. (Which, of course, you are.)
Also, finally got around to reading what you’ve got of lf01 so far; want me to make a typo-sniping run on it?

For an abomination from Hell, Benny is so likeable. Seems like you’re not going to do anything with Susie in this series. However, I have a feeling that she’s going to play an important part in a future series.

Sure, go ahead.

Susie’s a bit young to be really important right now. She’ll definitely come into play more later. For now, enjoy your hypermagical toddler.

I can’t wait to meet her brother Autumn…

We kinda already did. Lilith got Far godhood and became Fall. Her reign was short lived, mind you.

Darn, and I was imagining this wonderfully talented and angsty teenager who always wants to be someplace else.

If I had to pick one over the other, I’d pick Forsaken Shores, since it’s the self-contained story. I’d certainly buy and enjoy both a FS book and a Second Age compilation book, though!

Of course I’d love another book! I’d combine FS and SA into one book, though, similarly to how they are on the site. But I have no problems with buying them separately either, as long as I can have more 2f books.
Also, UE book, do it! ;) (And get the final chapters there out of draft status as well.)

I have plenty of ISBNs, so I can do a UE book, but the problem is the sheer SIZE of a UE book. It’d really drive the costs through the roof since custom print books are priced per-page. I will look into it, though.
Same reason a combined Second Age and Forsaken Shores are outta the question. Although I would toss in sa02, since it’s critical to fs.

I actually read the new section the other night, but here’s another quick reading for typos and my misc. reactions:
— Neat desc of how Foresight works, for Emily anyway.
— “would not come to pass / would come to pass” — you could condense that if you want, to “would / would not come to pass”
— “when confronted with something that made him uncomfortable” — but can’t we already infer that from the “meant to reassure him” bit? (It’s fine either way, just noting…)
— Huh, he got the steel from or through Canada? I’d better reread that…
— Yay witch statue. :D
— “Designated Female Upper Arm Grab Area” — heheheheh…
— Hmm, you give enough background on them here… I don’t think you HAVE to include Chloe’s original story chapter as a bonus in a book just for that reason.
— “secret service” — if it’s like the current group, cap that.
— I love it that for whatever reason (I can think of a few) Benny now feels annoyingly obliged to go with. :D
— Emily’s sudden appearance in-scene = amusing also. Thanks for scenage!

Actually, he kind of does have to include the chapter that introduces Benny in Forsaken Shores, because otherwise he just shows up in that story without any introduction whatsoever.
On a completely different note, if Fall isn’t an option for Emily and Scout’s second kid, I’m betting on getting Dawn and Dusk as twins.

Ya think so? I dunno, I mean it’s hard for me to judge since we’ve already read that chapter, but in this chapter we find out that Benny’s a demon, his general M.O., that he helped the group out instead of his boss, the Chloe background, etc.
As for second kids… if I were Emily or Scout, I’d declare Susie enough of a handful and just stop there. o_o Can you imagine the sibling rivalries? Just one kid’s tantrums are horrifying enough, no doubt.
