a quickie: witchipedia

8 07 2009

I’ll be editing new articles tonight for Witchipedia, the in-story world document for anachronauts. So, any other world elements you’d like to see in more detail, while I’m in here? Note that continuity wise this can’t include anything Emily didn’t encounter or know about prior to a01 (so, no Orbital stuff).

Next planned articles up will be Wendigoes, Winterhounds, and Enchantments.

EDIT: Okay, the Witchipedia update is live! Enjoy.

Esrever. She recognized the name immediately, so whatever she knows or has been told about him. Also Lilith. Assuming you weren’t planning on putting a lot of that into a04, of course.

I think for those two, we’re better off letting it be revealed in stories. It takes the fun away to detail them extensively here. Plus, Witchipedia is more concerned with ‘classes’ of people, rather than individuals themselves. That’s why Winterhounds and Wendigoes make sense.

A “state of the known world outside North America” article would be nice. I think there was mention of a tenuous internet connection to other continents somewhere, I’d like to here more about that.

I think I should save those articles for the inevitable sequels and side stories. Otherwise I risk being locked into one idea when another would’ve made a better story.

Aha. An article on money would be a good idea! Thanks.
An actual group of roving merchants also makes sense; I may explore that in a sidestory.

Glamor?
A merchant faction?
What is the common currency and should a witch charge for a spell?

In addition to the above, Fae artifacts? I know, they’re not mentioned in-story until we get to a03, but no one seems surprised by the concept. So… what are some common ones, why would a human want them, etc.

I’ll add some notes about that to Enchantments.

I’d actually like to see more about “mortal” magic. What are the limits/capabilities of spells? So far, all of Emily’s spells required, at least during the incantation, a touch range. Is that always a requirement, just for certain “schools”, or an artifact of Emily’s “safer spellcasting”?
What about magical enhancements*? Are those separate spells, or do they incorporate “basic” spells with a bit of metamagic (I posted an image a few days ago that should give you an idea of what I mean there:
)
Are there different limits on these from regular spells? How “permanent” are they?
*Pet peeve of mine: Enhancement, not enchantment. You enchant people; you enhance objects. I imagine Emily would quibble over the difference too; she seems the type, and it is her profession, after all, though I may be reading too much of my own character into hers.

I prefer enchantment.
They’re no different from other spells. The article I wrote specifically states there is no “Spell of Other Spells”. As for the rest, I’d rather not nail down every little aspect of magic. It limits me.
The pages’ll be posted later tonight.

On the Witchipedia page, the link to the Pandora Event page on the left-hand menu is broken. (Page not found.)

Thanks! Fixed.

Here’s your friendly link checker again. The Winter Court links on the Wendigoes and Winterhounds pages are wrong, it should be winter.html, not wintercourt.html.

‘kay, fixed.

Bravo! I like the limitations. It makes it clear why even a human magic-user (who otherwise would not need to bother) would traffic with the Fae.

Obviously 2f will use whichever word he wants, but I’m curious — why are you saying that only people are enchanted? The dictionary doesn’t specify.

Really minor note here — on the Glamour page, SexyElf86 seems amenable to glamours though he likes fully-woven concert shirts too.
But on the Internet page, he says he doesn’t trust glamours:

Good point. Given the choice between tossing one or another as the official canon of the character, I’ll toss him disliking glamour. He needs to be a contrast to no-nonsense Emily.
